Key features of the new European Regulation on packaging and packaging waste
Our Dispute Resolution Area has produced an analysis of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste, adopted by the European Union and known by its acronym PPWR, which is gradually replacing the previous Directive 94/62/EC and establishes a framework that is directly applicable and uniform across all Member States
The Regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 22 January 2025 and will generally apply from 12 August 2026.
The impact of the new regulation is not limited to environmental compliance: it will affect product design, labelling, supply contracts, technical documentation, responsibilities within the value chain, and the marketing of products within the European Union.
